Upholstery Fabrics | Busting Common Myths

This blog post is for all those fearful parents (of humans and animals), red wine connoisseurs, and Netflix bingers who dream of ivory sofas and chenille headboards but believe they “can’t have nice things” because of sticky fingers, dirty paws, splashes of wine, or buttered-popcorn stains. Well, fear no more! We’re here to tell you that everyone can have beautiful upholstered goods!

Grandma’s upholstered settee is not the upholstered sofa of today. Fabrics have come a long way. We’d like to prove it to you infomercial-style where we pour a glass of red wine onto a white fabric and watch it neatly pool and vanish with one quick wipe, but we don’t believe in wasting wine like that. Instead, we’re going to bust all the myths about upholstered furniture with cold hard facts while sharing some of our favourite upholstered goods from over the years.

Myth: My kids are too messy to have a nice upholstered sofa. I can only have leather sofas for the next eighteen years.

Busted: We know how messy little ones can get, so we understand the hesitation to invest in upholstery, but let us ease your mind. A wide variety of treatments exist that can be applied to fabrics so that they are easy to clean and result in carefree living. Some treatments use the same oil-repellent technology used in smart phones and tablets. Cool, right?

Myth: If I apply a stain resistant treatment to my fabric, it won’t be soft anymore.

Busted: Older treatments like Teflon left furniture feeling like a waterproof tarp. But new-age treatments don’t change the feel of the fabric. They remain soft!

Myth: Fabric treatment? What’s the point? It’ll just wear off and I’ll have to get it treated again.

Busted: New-generation fabric treatments are permanent and durable, meaning that the stain-free properties will not deteriorate after washing or heavy use. These fabrics can be stained, cleaned, and stained again and again. Washing your fabric will not diminish the treatment’s properties. Mind blowing, right?

Myth: I can’t have an upholstered sofa because of pet odour. Everything my dog touches smells—badly.

Busted: Some of the fabrics we offer are treated with built-in odour resistance, which keeps fabrics smelling extra fresh! Feel free to snuggle up with Fido as much as you want.

Myth: Treatments freatments. You’re up-selling a “feature,” and then I’ll need to buy more fancy cleaning products to clean the treated fabric.

Busted: Fibreguard fabrics and Crypton-treated fabrics are easy to clean without intense chemical products. This is what Fibreguard recommends:

  1. Remove any remaining stain residue with a teaspoon.
  2. Apply water to the stain and blot using a white paper towel (do not rub in a circular motion). Repeat the process until the stain residue is no longer visible on the paper towel.
  3. Apply more water to the area (for stubborn stains, a normal household bar of soap may be necessary) and gently rub with a microfibre cloth. Use circular movements for best results. Repeat the process until completely removed (when using soap, use intermittently).
  4. Allow the fabric to dry naturally. Do not apply heat.

Sounds pretty straightforward to us!

Myth: I don’t want to be exposed to fabric treatments that are made of deadly chemicals.

Busted: The fabrics and treatments we offer are green conscious. One of them, Crypton, is screened for more than 10,000 chemicals and volatile organic compounds that are commonly known to pollute indoor air. It is free of potentially harmful levels of Volatile Organic Compounds, formaldehyde, heavy metals, phenols, phthalates, and skin sensitizers.

The other treatment, FibreGuard, is endorsed by Oeko-Tex (the International Association for Research and Testing in the Field of Textile and Leather Ecology), which certifies that fabrics are produced in a way that is safe for the environment and humans and that no harmful chemicals or finishes are released from this fabric.
